Motor City Brewing Works – A Midtown Gem

7 May

Motor City Brewing Works is a small brewery with a big personality. It’s custom design & fabrication tapped into the resources available in the area. Salvaged equipment & scrap from Detroit’s industrial era was re-purposed by some of the city’s finest craftsmen, artists, and fabricators. The cement bar in on the main level is a draw, as are the little bistro tables set up in the store-front – often left open for a lovely al fresco feeling. The rooftop deck, however, is my favorite spot. Weather permitting, it’s the place to be!

It’s located in Midtown, in the Cultural Center of the city – within walking distance to Wayne State University, the Museum District, the Detroit Main Library and more. I was lucky enough to live half a block away from the MCBW a few years back.

The brewery has been operating since 1994 and incorporates natural ingredients of the finest quality to produce wonderful craft beers. “Ghettoblaster” is an iconic choice, and is offered on tap at local festivals. My favorite is “Nut Brown” but I ventured into a seasonal brew last night called “Bohemian Lager” that was quite nice. MCBW’s beers are carried in many Detroit and surrounding area bars, as well as some markets. But, the way I enjoy it best is on site! Feel free to take something to enjoy at home later, though. Get a growler for $12 and bring it back for an $8 on your next visit.

My beau and I had the pleasure of going there yesterday evening. We went with 3 friends who hadn’t been there before and I think they enjoyed themselves as much as we did. The atmosphere is so relaxed, perfect for a Sunday evening catching up with friends you haven’t seen in a while.

We started with a beer tasting flight, so our friends could have a better idea of what they might like to order.

MCBW is not only a great place to satiate your summer thirst, but also a wonderful place to eat. Their brick oven pizzas never disappoint, with a solid standard menu, a build-your-own section, a few tapas offerings, and always a lovely daily special board. We ordered several pizzas. Here’s the Mediterranean for your viewing pleasure.

If you live in the area, please give this place a try if you haven’t already! If you’re not from around here, please add this to your to-do list if you ever make it to Detroit (and I sincerely hope you do)!
